Is it Enough Just to Survive?
Olya Bezvushko

I’d been to the US for times, while which I faced many facts and situations I could not even imagine before. Then I found out that not only me, but all students who participate in studying abroad programs have similar experience. So, let’s have a look at some common cases.

You may have seemed like a good study abroad candidate. You are a good student and probably are used to success that’s why you expect yourself to be successful abroad as well starting from the day of your arrival. When I first arrived to the USA I found myself list in the area, confused by the language and stood away from Americans being scared to relate to them. I remember my thoughts “How could I become such unlucky and miserable?” the first day in the new city I tried to explore where everything was and who everyone was. At that time I understood that when you are in a new country and have to deal with people who speak a different language the easiest things appear to be hard to do and you are made to work at everything. So do not think of having a success straight on arrival. You will have it but a little bit later.  At first you just have to survive.

It is important to set some personal goals while staying abroad, don’t be upset and discouraged if you fail to reach them. Your home aims can be just impossible to implement overseas. Remember that you are brave and unbiased person just for daring to spend some time abroad. Those who are able to enter the new environment immediately, make a whole lot of friends and see numerous sites of a new country, deserve to be congratulated.

One more thing you should know before going abroad is: It’s normal to be depressed from time to time. If you have homesickness attack and ask yourself why you ever decided to leave home, you have to answer: I worked hard to get here and deserve to be here! Moreover, all worries and uncertainties that may arise in the evening will disappear in the morning after a sound sleep.

Those who are planning on going abroad for an extended period of time should be ready for disappointments and surprises and for contradictory feelings that may appear toward the home country and the new host one. You will face challenges unlike any that you may find at home and it is exactly what presents seemingly endless opportunities for accomplishment.
